Eligibility For Episcopacy in The United Methodist Church

The Philippine Central Conference of The United Methodist Church which will meet on December 12-16, 2012 in Bayombong, Nueva Viscaya will be electing three United Methodist Bishops for the Philippines. Some are asking what are the qualifications of a Methodist clergy who can be elected bishop. So I am posting here note and guidelines for bishops who will be presiding during the elections of bishop in the United Methodist Church.

“In the past there has been some confusion or inconsistency in the requirement regarding who can be elected a bishop in The United Methodist Church. Following is a statement of the only qualification necessary for consideration for election:

• The single requirement for election as a bishop in The United Methodist Church is to be an elder in full connection in The United Methodist Church (¶ 403). This rule is true for all the central and jurisdictional conferences. There is no requirement based on years of service!

This disciplinary requirement is true for both jurisdictional and central conference bishops. The only point of difference between jurisdictional bishops and central conference bishops is that the central conferences may have different tenures, depending on the by-laws of that central conference. Thank you for your careful attention to this matter as you preside. This information is being distributed to all bishops in the active relationship.
