i AM PUBLISHING SOME OF THE PETITIONS THAT OUR DELEGATES TO THE GENERAL CONFERENCES WILL DEALING:
TENURE OF BISHOPS
To amend par. 50 as follows:
Par. 50. article VI- The Bishops…at the time of union and bishops elected by the jurisdictions of The United Methodist Church shall have ( removed LIFE) tenure as determined by the jurisdictional conference from where the bishop is elected. Each bishop elected by the central conference of The United Methodist church shall have such tenure as the central conference electing him shall have determined.
RATIONALE:
Enabling each jurisdiction to determine the tenure of their bishop could increase accountability between bishops and their constituency where jurisdictions decide their bishop must be re-elected every quadrennium or given a specific term of service similar to the term episcopacy operative in Central Conferences.
This is a very good direction if the Jurisdictional Conferences will wake up and realize that Bishops are also subject to scrutiny and therefore will become more responsible if they know that they only have four years or one quadrennium to serve. If the Bishops are reelected it will validate their effectiveness in the church hierarchy.
